Southwark

A Central London district and is to the Southwark London Borough's north-west is Southwark (/ˈsʌ ərk/ SUDH-ərk). Three main tube stations are in the area: Southwark nearby, Borough, and one which with a railway station that is major is combined, close to the river, London Bridge. At Southwark, in what is now Borough High Street, Watling Street and Stane Street, two Roman roads met.

Only during the time of King Alfred and his successors, Southwark appears to recover. In the Domesday Book of 1086 within the hundred of Brixton as held by several Surrey manors, Southwark appears. Consisted initially of the St Olave, St George the Martyr, St Mary and St Margaret Surrey parishes is the ancient borough of Southwark. Southwark St Thomas from St Olave was split off around 1555 and Southwark St John Horsleydown in 1733 was split off also.

Combined with the Paris Garden's former liberty, Southwark Christchurch, to form the St Saviour's District was St Saviour. The two boroughs were combined with the Camberwell Metropolitan Borough in 1965 to form the Southwark London Borough that is current. The City obtained control from King Edward III of the manor next to the south side of London Bridge known as the Southwark Town (called the Guildable Manor latterly-i.e., the tolls and taxes place) in 1327.

In 1550, Southwark was incorporated into the City of London as the ward of Bridge Without, after many decades of petitioning. Because of the association with the City of London, Southwark still has vestiges of this. In Southwark, there are five (BIDs) business improvement districts; The Blue Bermondsey, Better Bankside, We Are Waterloo, Team London Bridge, and South Bank BID. Southwark Cathedral, London Bridge station, and The River Thames are to the north.

Southwark Cathedral, a priory founded a cathedral in 1905, noted for its Merbecke Choir, is another landmark. Outside of the control of the City of London and was a haven for criminals and free traders, who would conduct trades and sell goods outside the City's Livery Companies regulation, was Southwark. Southwark's first playhouse theatre, The Rose, opened in 1587.

Also the location of those of King's Bench, the Marshalsea, and the Prerogative or Crown Courts, that of the manors courts that are local e.g. The Clink, Borough Compter, originally housed at the White Lion Inn, the Surrey county gaol, and eventually at Horsemonger Lane, was Southwark. Another Southwark great fire destroyed a large number of buildings between Tooley Street and the Thames in 1861, including those around Hays Wharf, later followed by Hays Galleria, and blocks to the west almost as far as St Olave's Church.
